Clockwork Pendant I by deaddamien Clockwork Pendant I by deaddamien
Pendant - silver, steel, ruby bearings

I have found that carefully dismantling old watches is a very calming procedure that holds you in a peaceful, trance-like state. I received a handful of old watches from my grandfather a while ago, and upon opening one of them I found utter, functional beauty. The small red bits you see are ruby bearings, used in fancy watches for their distinct oily smoothness.

Letting form follow function I encased two of these whatevers in silver.

This is beautiful!! I also have a fascination with the inside of watches, but i have never done anything like this! Would love to one day explore something like this myself!! x

Ah, it always particularly warms my heart when another jewelry maker enjoys my work - thank you! In case you want to try something similar, I'll reveal that the frame here was built in the same fashion as one makes camée frames - the watch part was put in from the behind and tightened in place with a wire hoop.

I love the simplicity of it! we at Tea-Cat get to dismantle larger clocks, and its just as calming. *really evil grin* until they give me the bolt cutters <3 then theres small explosions of gears.

Dismantling anything as functional as clocks or watches should be a form of deconstructive therapy, I think. Glad you like! Sneaked a peek of your stuff too, and it's quite fantastic.

Indeed it is, you can find it in the shop. For some reason I cannot recollect the name has switched to Clockwork Pendant II, but it's the same exact piece.

I love this piece. What are the measurements? Are any of your works for sale?

Glad you like!

The pendant is made of wrist watch parts, which gives a hint of the dimensions - the diameter is about three centimeters, if I remember correctly. And yes, a majority of my works are indeed for sale. There should be a website up in the near future, which oughta simplify the whole buying and selling thing.

You're very welcome! This is inspiring. My husband's pocketwatch broke the other day, & I checked to see if I could do something with it. It didn't have a way for me to get the back off though. But still, you got me to thinking. ;)

That's a very nice example of nostalgia and of found object usage. And it looks spiffy, too. ;D

How much do one of these cost?

I've sent you a couple of notes asking and either you didn't get them or haven't read them but I really want to buy this pendant.

Please reply

This is a very neat piece. I like it a lot. The shape, design and symmetry are very appealing. :)

Now just imagine the amount of time that went into making all of those little pieces fit together and actually work to tell time. It's almost mind-boggling.

Exactly - there were countless little gears and whatnot that fit perfectly into the grooves and holes of the watch. I'm happy that I'm not required such precision as a goldsmith - I just need to make beautiful things.
