Silver

In a desperate attempt to cheer myself up, I embarked on a little project of my own. It's a replica of the signet ring worn by the Master / Harold Saxon in the final three episodes of third season of Doctor Who. I simplified the very detailed design a little - the original has seven pairs of spheres, this one only five. Also the engraved marks on the spheres are a LOT fewer than what the props department had sketched on their papers. The ring is also somewhat larger than what John Simm wears on his finger in the scenes, but I find signet rings are supposed to be huge. The diameter of the seal is 20 millimeters.

I thought I'd see if I could still make a hollow-form signet ring out of memory. Apparently I can. Sort of. The seams are dotted with little holes and the ring's plagued with firescale, but I don't care, I was working absent-mindedly to keep my (absent) mind off other stuff. Oh, and apologies for the crappy engraving. I am a crap engraver.

I also dropped the damn thing, all the way from my desk to the floor of the balcony where I work, from which it rolled through the metal grille of the spiral stairs and fell to the stone floor below. A substantial dent ensued.

It still makes me a happy, though. And fits my right ring finger perfectly.

wonderful!
I want to know what material it is to make the little circles,it seems hard to carve on the small metal things. And the size, exactly?I want to make myself one too.it seems you use a ring and change it as the saxon ring ,is that it?
you can use green epoxy Resin to make it look more like the one in that episode.

Glad you like! Even if it's a fan prop thing of sorts, I have to admit this is still one of my favorite things I've made.

I actually made the whole ring from scratch, it's a basic hollow signed ring structure, the diameter of the ring face is 20mm. Each of the inner circles was made from a round silver bar of according diameter, it's much easier to draw wire round than to try to saw and file round shapes from sheet. The biggest circle is 7mm, the smallest seems to be 1,3mm. I think the original Saxon design had 2x7 spheres, but I dropped two from both sides due to space issues.

Engraving on something that small is indeed a bit tricky, and I'm not very good at it in the first place - that's why the engraving work is so shoddy. I am ashamed. A little.

I didn't want to muck about with epoxy resin, it makes such a mess and quickly discolours when in prolonged contact with silver. Figured simple patina will do the trick well enough.

That is so cool. I really want a replica of the Master's ring for myself because it's so cool-looking.

Thanks!

It really is a rather brilliant design, the Laz Labs logo works so well in ring form. And, well, who doesn't love the mad Master!
