I have been working on this commission piece for several months now, picking it up whenever I had a spare moment. The design was done together with the customer, who wanted an oriental-style latch for a cabinet serving as the base of a large fish tank. The circular background was copied and modified from the picture of an original antique latch, but the mechanism itself along with the fish were all me.
The whole thing, particularly that damn fish, kind of got completely out of hand - I sunk an idiotic amount of intricate detail into it, simply because I was enjoying myself quite, and didn't have a deadline. The fish and the bits that it runs through were cast in bronze, the circular ornament was cut from a sheet of the same material. The diameter of the latch is 200 mm.
I managed to frighten my poor customers momentarily, when I sent them pictures of the finished thing - they thought it looked too good for the original deal, but I assured them that we'll stick to the price we agreed on when the commission was ordered. It's not the customer's fault if the smith has a fit of obsessive-compulsiveness.
I just asked them to never, ever tell anyone what they'd paid for the thing.
The customers came to pick up the piece yesterday, and now I'm feeling all motherly-sad. The little latch has flown the nest-workshop, snif!
Great work, and a very lucky customer. The detail on the fish is terrific. A perfect oriental-style latch for the cabinet. I know how you feel when something that you have made leaves the workshop to go to a new home, however it all helps to put bread on the table. Lol.
Prrrrrrreciousssssssssssss...
I had a feelin' you'd like.
